Adriano Giannini in ‘Back To Buenos Aires’

EXCLUSIVE: Fandango Sales has signed key deals on Marco Bechis’ Back To Buenos Aires, following its world premiere in Competition at Venice film festival this week.

The film has sold to France (Paradis), Greece (Filmtrade), Bulgaria (Beta), Switzerland (Trigon), Benelux (September), Scandinavia (Lucky Dogs) and Portugal (Risi).

Further territories including Latin America are in negotiation. Fandango will release the film in Italy on September 17, with Paris Films releasing in cinemas in Brazil.

Back To Buenos Aires is inspired by a personal subject for Chilean-Italian filmmaker Bechis, who was kidnapped and imprisoned during Argentina’s military dictatorship.

Set in 2008, the film follows a man who returns to Argentina after 33 years in Italy, to testify at the trial of former military officers who kidnapped, tortured and enslaved him during the military dictatorship.

The film is an Italy-Brazil co-production between Fandango, 39Films, Karta Film, 34 Filmes with Rai Cinema. Backers including the Fondo per lo Sviluppo Degli Investimenti Nel Cinema E Nell-Audiovisivo del Ministero della Cultura DGCA with contribution of the Piemonte Film & TV Fund and support of the Film Commission Torino Piemonte and Fondo Settoriale Dell’audiovisivo.

Bechis’ previous films on the subject include 1999 Cannes Un Certain Regard title Olympic Garage, and 2001 Venice selection Sons And Daughters.
