Fox's sci-fi adventure Jumper starring Hayden Christensen as a globe trotting teleporter dominated the four-day Presidents' Day weekend thanks to a $31.7m estimated haul.

The film has grossed $38.3m since it opened on Thursday and also stars Samuel L Jackson, Diane Lane and Jamie Bell. Doug Liman directed.

Opening in second place was the dance Paramount's family saga The Spiderwick Chronicles starring Freddie Highmore that grossed $24.5m and $26.8m since the Thursday launch.

Many distributors chose to open films on Thursday to give releases a five-day platform over the long weekend.

The romantic dance drama Step Up 2 The Streets, released in North American through Buena Vista, opened in third place on $21.5m over four and $28.1m over five days, while Universal's romantic comedy Definitely, Maybe with Ryan Reynolds, Rachel Weisz and Abigail Breslin launched in fifth place and earned $14.5m over five days.

Last weekend's champion Fool's Gold fell three places on $15m for $43.9m and Fox Searchlight's smash Oscar nominated comedy Juno dropped two to seventh in the 11th weekend on $5.5m for $124.9m.

Buena Vista's 3-D sensation Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best Of Both Worlds tumbled six places to ninth in the third weekend and stands at just over $59m - a highly impressive run given that the TV adaptation remains in a barely wide release pattern.

Next weekends major releases are: Lionsgate's comedy Witless Protection starring Larry The Cable Guy; the drama Charlie Bartlett starring Anton Yelchin and to be released through MGM; New Line's comedy Be Kind Rewind with Jack Black and Mos Def; and Sony's thriller Vantage Point starring Dennis Quaid.
