Avengers becomes fourth biggest US film in India

The Avengers is now the fourth highest-grossing Hollywood film of all time in India, according to distributor Disney UTV.

The film has taken $8.4m (Rs470m) since its April 27 opening in India, one week prior to the US release, and is still playing to full houses. It opened on a record 800 screens in 2D, 3D and IMAX and in four languages – English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Avatar is the highest-grossing US film of all time in India, with a final tally of $16m (Rs899m), followed by 2012 with $11.6m (Rs647.5m) and Spider-Man 3 with $8.8m (Rs489.6m).

“The unprecedented success of The Avengers in India is a great demonstration of how the same aggressive marketing and distribution strategies we adopt to release our big-ticket Hindi movies can be applied to Hollywood movies as well,” said Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director - studios, Disney UTV.

The film is one of the first big US films released by UTV since its integration into Disney, which recently acquired the Indian studio outright.
