He had been president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan.

Ken Munekata has been appointed as President of BBC Worldwide Japan, effective immediately. 

He had been at Sony for nearly 30 years, most recently as President of Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan and President of Sony Broadcast Media.

Based in Tokyo, he will report to Joyce Yeung, General Manager & Senior Vice President, BBC Worldwide Sales & Distribution Asia.  He will be responsible for leading the commercial activities and strategic development for BBC Worldwide across its Sales & Distribution and Consumer Products businesses, as well as live events and theatrical distribution.  Ken will also have strategic oversight of developing BBC Worldwide Channels opportunities in Japan, working with Mark Whitehead, Senior Vice President & General Manager, BBC Worldwide Channels Asia.

Yeung said: “I’m delighted that Ken will be heading up our business in Japan.  With his extensive management and business development experience in the Japanese media industry, I’m confident he will bring new growth opportunities to BBC Worldwide Japan and create collaboration with other Asian territories.”

He succeeds Katsuhiko Waza, who announced his retirement last year and will continue to serve as a non-executive director of BBC Worldwide Japan. He had been president of BBC Worldwide Japan since it was founded in 2000.
