Prison drama R sweeps Danish Robert Awards

A low-budget film about life in a Danish prison, R, by writer-directors Tobias Lindholm and Michael Noer, swept the Danish Robert Awards at Sunday’s gala ceremony in Copenhagen’s Cirkusbygningen.

Their feature debut, which has sold 33,000 tickets domestically, took eight prizes, including Best Feature, Best Directors, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor (Pilou Asbæk).

Golden Globe winner and Oscar-nominated Susanne Bier’s In a Better World (Hævnen) was considered in two categories – although not for Best Feature – and won only the Best Actress Award, for Trine Dyrholm. The film took more than 400,000 admissions in local theatres.

Dogme-director Thomas Vinterberg’s Submarino (co-scripted with Tobias Lindholm), about the confrontation of two estranged brothers, left with five prizes, one for Peter Plauborg as Best Supporting Actor.

The Audience Award went to Mikkel Nørgaard Clown-The Movie (Klovn-The Movie), a Zentropa Entertainments spin-off from the Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen sitcom which in 14 days became the biggest local film success in 2010, with more than 810,000 admissions.
