UK regional agency Film London is investing $367,000 (£247,000) in improving access to film heritage across the UK capital, through the department of culture, media and sport’s UK Screen Heritage programme.

The injection of funding will go towards an 18-month project aimed at supporting London’s moving image archives/collections, with a view to creating an online showcase of the material.

The focus will be on film and video material that has the most significance to London and its communities, with the funds being shared across approximately 70 publically accessible archives, libraries and museums.

Dr Cathy Ross, chair of London’s Screen Archives, said: “This funding will provide a much-needed focus for the region’s museums, libraries and archives, allowing us all to start unlocking the cultural riches that our film holdings represent.”

Adrian Wootton, CEO of Film London added: ” Projects like this demonstrate how valuable film heritage is for community-building and to generate a sense of place and we are delighted to support the local collections to continue this crucial work.”
