Participant Productions and State Street Pictures producers Bob Teitel and George Tillman are developing Bobby Martinez, a biopic about the first Mexican-American professional surfer on the world tour.

Robert Munic, who wrote Summit Entertainment and Mandalay Pictures' upcoming teen fight club drama Get Some, has been hired to write the screenplay.

The film charts the rapid rise of Martinez from his origins in a gang-infested Southern Californian community to his all-conquering first year as an amateur surfer and eventual success as a professional. Participant's director of production Nate Moore will oversee the project.

'Bobby Martinez is a perfect Participant movie because it tells an inspiring story of how one guy overcomes incredible odds and uses his personal triumph to help others,' said Participant's executive vice president of production Jonathan King

He added that the project broke new ground for the company because it is for and about urban youth. 'Beyond that, Bobby himself is an inspirational maverick.'

State Street's vice-president of development and production Rene Rigal brought the project in after reading about Martinez in a newspaper.
