Japanese director Hitoshi Matsumoto, whose Dai Nipponjin screened in Cannes Directors Fortnight in 2007, has wrapped his latest feature R100, produced by Yoshimoto Creative Agency.

Yoshimoto describes the film as “an intense sex comedy about a man who joins a mysterious club which opens the door to another world he has never before experienced.”

A famous local comedian, Matsumoto made his writer/director debut with Dai-Nipponjin, which after Cannes screened at Toronto, Busan and Rotterdam; and was also picked up for a US remake.

His second film Symbol (2009) premiered at Toronto and screened at Rotterdam, Berlin and Busan. His third, Scabbard Samurai (2011), premiered at Locarno and screened at Pusan and Mar del Plata. R100 is Matsumoto’s fourth directorial effort.

The cast features Nao Omori, whose credits include Vibrator and Ichi The Killer; well-known stage actress Mao Daichi; Shinobu Terajima (Catapillar); Hairi Katagiri (Kamome Diner); supermodel Ai Tominaga; Eriko Sato and Matsumoto himself.

The film is set to be released in Japan on October 5 through the local distribution arm of Warner Brothers Pictures. Hisayuki Hoshi of Yoshimoto’s international publicity team and Japan’s Freestone Production will be representing the film in the Cannes market.
