Julie Taymor's pop music odyssey Across The Universe will have its world premiere as a gala presentation at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, it was announced today. Also announced as a gala is Woody Allen's Venice world premiere title Cassandra's Dream.

The musical pays homage to 30 'generation-defining' pop songs including several Beatles hits such as 'Hey Jude', 'I Am the Walrus' and the eponymous Beatles' anthem. Co-written with Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, the writers of Alan Parker's blues-themed The Commitments, the film follows two star-crossed lovers, Jude and Lucy, against a 1960s backdrop of political protest, mind exploration and the evolution of rock.

Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood star alongside appearances of Eddie Izzard and U2 frontman Bono. Produced by Suzanne Todd, Jennifer Todd of Team Todd and Matthew Gross and backed by Revolution Studios, the film will be distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

London-set thriller Cassandra's Dream stars Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell as brothers desperate to better their troubled lives. Written and directed by Allen, the film also features Hayley Atwell, Tom Wilkinson and Sally Hawkins. The score is by Phillip Glass. Producers are Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum and Gareth Wiley. The Weinstein Company is distributing in the US while Christal Films has rights in Canada. Wild Bunch is handling international sales.
