Alex Hamilton, the former president of Icon Film Distribution, has joined growing UK distributor Contender Entertainment Group.

He has been appointed director of Contender Films, the company's feature film theatrical distribution and operations division for the UK and Ireland.

He takes the post as of April 1 and will report to CEG managing director Richard Bridgwood.

Hamilton departed Icon in November 2006. Prior to that job, he was director of sales and business development at Momentum Pictures.

Bridgwood said: 'Alex's experience in building successful theatrical distribution businesses made him a stand out candidate in a highly accomplished field. We are delighted that Alex will be spearheading our expansion in this area and look forward to him joining our growing team.'

Hamilton added: 'I am thrilled to be joining such an exciting and forward thinking group, and believe that Contender Films and Entertainment One are perfectly placed to thrive in an increasingly dynamic and competitive market.'

Contender has been owned by Canada-based Entertainment One since summer 2007.

Its recent film acquisitions include Martin Scorsese's as-yet-untitled Bob Marley documentary, Nick Broomfield's Battle For Haditha, serial killer thriller Anamorph, and comedy The Chosen One.
