‘Aquaman’

DECEMBER 26 UPDATE: DC Entertainment’s international smash Aquaman roared to the top of the North American charts on a confirmed $72.7m, as box office for the year-to-date overtook the previous mark of $11.383bn set in 2016.

Meanwhile Disney executives announced the studio hit an industry record $3.0015bn, surpassing its own previous best of $3.0009bn set in 2016. In less triumphant news, Universal-DreamWorks’ Steve Carell vehicle Welcome To Marwen directed by Robert Zemeckis flopped in ninth place and tied with Paramount’s Action Point for the lowest debut of any major Hollywood release in 2018.

Aquaman starring Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Willem Dafoe and directed by James Wan arrived via Warner Bros in 4,125 theatres.

Opening in second place was Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns from director Rob Marshall starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda on $32.3m from 4,090, followed by Paramount’s Transformers spin-off Bumblebee from director Travis Knight starring Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena, on $21.7m from 3,550.

Last weekend’s champion Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse fell 53% and three slots to number four on $16.6m for $64.7m. STX’s Jennifer Lopez rom-com Second Act arrived at number seven on an underwhelming $6.5m in 2,607 sites. Welcome To Marwen, a recovery drama starring Carell that is based on the acclaimed documentary Marwencol, opened in ninth place on a dismal $2.4m in 1,911 venues. That is the lowest wide debut of Carell’s career and one of the worst from Zemeckis.

Focus Features’ Mary Queen Of Scots starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie climbed seven places to number 10 after expanding from 66 to 795 theatres in the third weekend and adding $2.3m for $3.6m. Amazon Studios launched Pawel Pawlikowski’s Oscar-shortlisted Polish foreign-language romance Cold War at number 30 on $54,353 in three venues.

Box office for the top 12 amounted to $167m, up 56.4% on last weekend and down 0.6% on the comparable session in 2017.

This week’s wide new releases are the comedy Holmes And Watson from Sony starring Will Ferrell and John C Reilly, and Vice from Annapurna with Christian Bale and Amy Adams.
