Disney/Lucasfilm’s behemoth crossed further significant milestones over the weekend to consolidate its status as the third biggest film of all time globally.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens added $13.9m worldwide to reach $2.008bn and ranks behind only Titanic on $2.186bn in 1997 and the record holder Avatar on $2.788bn, set in 2010. All figures are not adjusted for inflation.
The North American haul crossed $900m on Friday and as of Sunday stood at $905.6m. The film overtook Avatar’s previous record of $760.5m on January 6.
A further $7m boosted the international running total to $1.102bn.
The Disney/Lucasfilm smash has opened in all its territories and ranks as the biggest North American release in history, the fourth biggest international release and the third biggest global release.
