Dominican president Danilo Medina will lead a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 10 to officially open what representatives called the “first stage” of Indomina Pinewood Studios in the Caribbean.
The Dominican Republic facility boasts state-of-the art technology including a world-class water tank. Government sources said they felt the launch would boost the number of filming permits granted each year to between 30 and 40.
At a briefing in Cannes last week, representatives from a Dominican Republic delegation reminded attendees that the country offerd a 25% transferable tax credit on local spend with a minimum investment of $500,000.
The Dominican Republic also eliminates the 18% of the value added tax on most goods and production services.
Dominican minister of culture José Antonio Rodríguez and film commissioner Ellis Pérez were among those in attendance.
Since the passage of the Cinema Incentive Law in 2010 the number of features to shoot locally has grown from four or five a year to 23 in 2012, of which four were for non-Dominican productions.
