The BFI’s Board of Governors has approved an additional £1m funding for UK distributors via its P&A fund.

The additional £1m has raised the total value of the fund from £3m to £4m.

The news comes as the BFI has released the breakdown of its P&A support since April, with its most recent funding grants for Momentum’s Shame (£250,000) and Lionsgate’s Coriolanus (£200,000) among the biggest of the year.

Since April, the BFI has invested in 23 films through the marketing and distribution fund to the tune of £2.5m. The biggest single film grants have gone to Kaleidoscope’s A Lonely Place To Die (£299,000), Pathe’s The Skin I Live In (£250,000) and Shame.

Momentum has received the most in total, benefitting from £470,000 in support for Shame and Troll Hunter, while Artificial Eye has banked $399,000 for Wuthering Heights, The Deep Blue Sea and We Need To Talk About Kevin.

In a strong year for UK independents at the box office, the BFI’s Research and Statistics Unit reports the market share of independent British films at the UK box office in the first nine months of 2011 was 14.4%, the highest on record, up from 5.8% in 2010.
