Black Book star Carice Van Houten has been cast in Bryan Singer's wartime thriller Valkyrie.

The Dutch actress co-stars as the wife of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, played by Tom Cruise.

The cast reportedly also includes Kenneth Branagh, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Daniel Bruehl.

Based on actual events, Valkyrie tells about a 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler that is unfurled during the height of World War II.

Bryan Singer is helming the second large-scale US production to be shot this year at Germany 's Babelsberg Studios. Principal photography on the United Artists production is expected to start in the second half of July.

Valkyrie will be Van Houten's first major US feature. This summer, she plays the lead role in Dorothy Mills, a new psychological thriller by Agnes Merlet.

Next year, she stars as revolutionary South-African writer Ingrid Jonker in biopic Smoke and Ochre. The 30-year-old actress came to international acclaim in Paul Verhoeven's Dutch wartime thriller Black Book.
