Alex Lafuente Ania Jones Lara Perez Camina c BTeam Pictures

Need to know: Madrid-based BTeam Pictures spans both arthouse production and distribution. The company, which began life as a distributor, moved into producing in 2018 when BTeam’s founding partner Alex Lafuente produced Paula Ortiz’s The Bride, a loose adaptation of Federico Garcia Lorca’s 1933 play Blood Wedding. Its first co-production, Isaki Lacuesta’s Between Two Waters, won the Golden Shell at San Sebastian in 2018. A year later and actress Greta Fernandez won the Silver Shell for her work in Belen Funes’ debut film A Thief’s Daughter, which BTeam also co-produced with Spain’s Oberon Cinematografica. In partnership with Valérie Delpierre’s Inicia Films, BTeam was also behind Pilar Palomero’s first feature Schoolgirls (Berlinale Generation KPlus, 2020) which went on to triumph at Spain’s 2021 Goya Awards, winning four accolades including best picture and best new director. Nely Reguera’s The Volunteer, a co-production with Fasten Films and Homemade Films, premiered at this year’s Malaga Film Festival.

Key personnel: Founding partners Ania Jones, Alex Lafuente and Lara Perez Camina.

Incoming: BTeam has partnered again with Inicia Films for Palomero’s second feature La Maternal; it has also co-produced Manticora with Aqui y Alli Films, the fourth feature by director Carlos Vermut (Magical Girl), which Film Factory Entertainment is selling. BTeam’s features development slate includes revenge thriller Nina by Andrea Jaurrieta; El Descendiente, a debut feature by Fernando Perez; and Borja Cobeaga’s comedy Los Aitas, the latter in co-production with Inicia Films.

Alex Lafuente says: “The fact that we also handle distribution allows us to follow the whole creative process of a project until it reaches its audience.”
