‘Nevatars’

Projects with Andy Serkis, Margot Robbie, Omar Sy and Mark Ruffalo are among 68 titles selected for Venice Immersive, the extended reality section of Venice International Film Festival (September 2-12).

Serkis and Josh Youseff’s Nevatars, voiced by Daisy Ridley and Kathleen Turner, and Anthony Geffen’s Galapagos: The Last Eden, voiced by Robbie, are both to be experienced on smart glass devices.

They are two of 30 projects in the immersive competition, of which 22 are world premieres and eight are international premieres.

Other projects featuring starry names include Artou, directed by Abderrahmane Sissako and voiced by Sy; Solwata, a documentary about climate refugees, voiced by Ruffalo; Pierre Soulages tribute Outrenoir, voiced by Isabelle Huppert; and Anokhya: The Origin, produced by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman.

The selection also includes Bowie: Unseen Unheard, marking the 10th anniversary of the singer’s death created from rare photos shot by his official photographer Denis O’Regan.

Several projects cover contemporary topics, including We Shall Return about the plight of Palestinians in the West Bank; plus Sophia Bulgakova’s Spomyny and 36,000 Ways from Karim Ben Khelifa, about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Venice Immersive, with the programme showcased on September 1-2 on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio.

The Venice Immersive jury comprises president Paul Raphaël, co-founder of immersive outfit Felix & Paul Studios, Iranian director, animator, and visual artist Négar Motevalymeidanshah, and Belgian director and writer Kate Voet.
