Japanese actor and martial artist Sonny Chiba is to star in Lone Warrior, a period adventure from US writer-director Cameron Fertitta.

Fertitta (who previously made Hampton’s festival short Eli’s Boy) will co-produce with Hisami Kuroiwa (1997 Sundance Grand Prize-winner Sunday) and the film will be shot on locations in Japan. Pre-production is expected to start in the autumn.

Chiba, best known for 1974 samurai classic The Street Fighter, will play an ageing ronin who travels across seventeenth century Japan with a village geisha. He will work with Fertitta to choreograph the film’s action sequences.
