MLK/FBI

Cinetic has closed key territory sales in the UK, Scandinavia, Benelux, and Poland on Sam Pollard’s documentary MLK/FBI ahead of its European premiere at International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).

Dogwoof has acquired the film for the UK, NonStop for Scandinavia, Cherry Pickers for Benelux, and Against Gravity for Poland. Terry Steiner has picked up airlines rights, and additional territories are expected to close shortly.

MLK/FBI screens in IDFA’s Masters section and is in contention for the best creative use of archive award. Pollard uses archival footage and interviews with academics to illustrate how FBI head J. Edgar Hoover viewed Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. as a danger to the nation and sought to undermine his standing.

The film screened at Toronto and New York film festivals, was a Telluride selection, and was named Best Archival Documentary at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

Pollard was selected to receive lifetime achievement awards from DOCNYC and IDA Awards this year.

IFC will distribute MLK/FBI in the US on January 15, 2021. MLK/FBI.

The film is produced by Benjamin Hedin, and executive producers are Field of Vision’s Charlotte Cook, Play/Action Pictures’s Jeffrey Lurie and Marie Therese Guirgis, David Friend, and Cinetic Media’s Kate Hurwitz, Dana O’Keefe, and Steven Farneth.

IDFA runs through December 6.
