Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has sailed past £35m after just 10 days in cinemas, after an excellent second weekend hold at the UK-Ireland box office.
The Universal film added £11.9m, down just 5% on its opening weekend, with the biggest second weekend of the year to date.
With £35.3m, The Odyssey is tracking ahead of all previous Nolan films, including Oppenheimer, which had £27.7m at this stage and went on to become the director’s highest-grossing title with £59.8m.
It has already passed the lifetime totals of seven of Nolan’s 12 previous feature films, including Interstellar (£21.8m), and will pass the £35.9m of Inception today.
The film accounted for 66% of the total UK-Ireland box office this weekend, while Imax has accounted for a sizeable 21% of its cume to date.
Several family-friendly titles profited from the start of the school holidays in England and Wales. These included Disney’s Toy Story 5, which posted a 15% increase on its sixth weekend with £1.9m. The animated title is up to £49.1m total, slightly behind the £51.6m at the same stage of Toy Story 4, but overtaking the totals of all films from the Despicable Me / Minions franchise.
Disney stablemate Moana dropped 10% on its third weekend in cinemas, with £1.4m taking it to £8.4m total. It could still catch the £11.6m of last year’s Disney’s Snow White, but is well down on the totals of the previous animated Moana films.
Universal’s Minions & Monsters rose by 15% on its fourth weekend in cinemas, with £1.3m taking it to £12.2m total, ahead of animations including The Polar Express (£12.1m).
Olivia Wilde’s The Invite regained a top five spot on its fourth weekend in cinemas after an excellent 28% rise. The comedy-drama added £304,000 for Black Bear, and is up to almost £3.2m total.
Takings for the top five titles held impressively, falling just 2% on last weekend with a £16.8m total, and up 42% on the equivalent weekend from last year. The Odyssey will be a formidable opponent for next weekend’s blockbuster arrival, Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
New releases this weekend included Animal Farm, which brought in £29,255 from 232 sites at a £126 cinema average for Vue Lumière, and has £40,015 including previews.
