Deepa Mehta’s comedic take on the Sherlock Holmes universe Sher starring Jeremy Irons, and an animation featuring Keke Palmer and Alan Cumming will take part in the inaugural Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) International Financing and Project Market.
The financing and project market, part of TIFF: The Market (September 10-16) and presented by local government agency Ontario Creates, has selected 40 films, six series, and five ‘innovation’ projects, all at an advanced stage of development, and will unite more than 50 established producers with financiers, distributors, sales agents, and executives to help launch the projects worldwide.
A series of networking sessions and presentations will take place before an audience of peers, investors and industry leaders.
Producers from Canada, Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Taiwan, the Philippines, the UK, US and Zimbabwe will take part.
Indian-Canadian filmmaker Mehta directs Sher, which reimagines Sherlock Holmes’ legacy through an unexpected Indian connection. David Hamilton, Rajiv Maikhuri and Craig Stovel produce the Canadian film. Mehta’s credits include an adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children and I Am Sirat, which played at TIFF in 2012 and 2023 respectively.
Palmer and Alan Cumming have joined the voice cast, alongside rapper-actor Common and Regina Hall, in Daniel Jeanette’s US animated project Central Park Tale. The producers taking part are Jacqui Barcos and John Fragomeni.
Oscar winner Marlee Matlin has singed on to star alongside Jacob Tremblay in Matthew Kowalchuk’s The Gain, a Canadian film about a star high school quarterback who loses his hearing. Jason James and Daniel Smith Arnold produce alongside Kowalchuk.
Another Canadian film taking part is Glenn Wood’s The Vinyl Diaries, with Canadian comedian Mae Martin set to star alongside Carolyn Taylor. Wood also produces.
