Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson on the set of ‘One Battle After Another’

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has revealed its feature film nominations, with Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Guillermo Del Toro, Josh Safdie and Chloé Zhao getting nods for the Guild’s main award.

The DGA feature award is considered a strong indicator of Oscar success since only eight past winners have not gone on to take the directing Oscar as well, and only two films have won the best picture Oscar without their directors being DGA-nominated that year.

So the nominations bode well for Anderson’s One Battle After Another, Coogler’s Sinners, Del Toro’s Frankenstein, Safdie’s Marty Supreme and Zhao’s Hamnet.

Missing from the nominations, however, are the filmmakers from several of this year’s acclaimed international films: Joachim Trier missed out for Sentimental Value, Park Chan-wook for No Other Choice, Oliver Laxe for Sirât and Kleber Mendonça Filho for The Secret Agent

Among the nominees for the DGA’s first-feature prize are Iraq’s Hasan Hadi, for The President’s Cake, the UK’s Harry Lighton, for Pillion, and French-American filmmaker Eva Victor, for Sorry, Baby. Completing the first-time list are US filmmakers Charlie Polinger, for The Plague, and Alex Russell, for Lurker

Announcing the nominations DGA president Christopher Nolan said: “We could not be prouder to recognize the incredible work of this year’s nominees for their dedication to the art of filmmaking. On behalf of the entire Guild community, I extend my congratulations to these directors on this achievement, and we look forward to celebrating your work at the DGA Awards.”

Winners of the awards will be revealed at the 78th DGA Awards ceremony on February 7.
