
EXCLUSIVE: This year’s American Film Institute (AFI) European Union Film Showcase will open with Paulo Sorrentino’s Italian drama La Grazia and feature Mona Fastvold’s British historical drama The Testament Of Anne Lee as its closing night attraction.
The event, now in its thirty-eighth year and running December 3-21 at the AFI’s theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland, will screen 56 films in total, representing all 27 of the European Union’s member states. Among the total will be 18 of the films submitted for this year’s international film Oscar and eight US premieres.
The Oscar contenders will include Mascha Schilinski’s German submission The Sound Of Falling; Poland’s Franz, from Agnieszka Holland; Tunisia’s The Voice of Hind Rajab, from Kaouther Ben Hania; Lav Diaz’s Magellan, submitted by the Philippines; Hungary’s Orphan, by László Nemes; Belgium’s Young Mothers, from Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne; and Maryam Touzani’s Calle Malaga, from Morocco.
The event’s US and North American premieres include Gastón Solnicki’s Austrian satire The Souffleur and Miguel Ángel Jiménez’s Greek tragedy The Birthday Party.
Among the Showcase’s special presentations are Rebecca Zlotowski’s A Private Life, from France; Stéphane Demoustier’s The Great Arch, also from France; and Pietro Marcello’s Duse, from Italy.
