EXCLUSIVE: Coming out of the AFM, Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks has locked in a raft of deals on director Benjamin Avila’s legal thriller The Woman In The Line and Sebastian Schindel’s A Silent Death.
Netflix has acquired North America and Latin American rights to The Woman Of The Line, which is led by Uruguayan superstar Natalia Oreiro and Alberto Ammann. The story takes place during the aftermath of Argentina’s financial collapse in 2001 as a widow navigates the penal system to help her son after he is falsely accused of a crime.
Lev Cinemas has acquired the feature for Israel, Arna for Russia and CIS, and Spafax for airlines. France, Spain, Italy, German-speaking Europe, South Korea and Australia are under discussion.
Mostra Cine, Buffalo Films and Diving Media produced the feature based on the true story of the activist Andrea Casamento, who founded a Latin American network of relatives of detainees. Avila’s Clandestine Childhood screened in Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2012 and became Argentina’s Oscar submission that season.
Buyers have also responded to A Silent Death, in which a hunting guide stumbles upon a crime involving his niece in the depths of Patagonia during the 1980s. Joaquin Furriel, Soledad Villamil, Alejandro Awada, and Maria Marull star.
The film debuted on Disney+ in Latin America and has sold to Palace Cinemas for all Australia and New Zealand rights, Movistar+ for Spanish pay-TV/SVoD/digital, AV Jet for Taiwan, and Spafax for airlines. Talks are ongoing for the US, France, Japan, and South Korea.
