Focus Features will release Charlie Tyrell and Daniel Roher’s Sundance entry The AI Doc: Or How I Became An Apocaloptimist theatrically in North America on March 27, 2026.
Focus holds worldwide rights and Universal Pictures International will distribute around the rest of the world. The film will debut in January in Sundance’s Premieres section. The festival runs January 22-February 1, 2026.
The documentary is told through the eyes of Roher – who won the feature documentary Oscar for Navalny in 2023 – as an expectant father father-to-be on a quest to understand the world his child is about to inherit.
Through in-depth conversations with leading voices in AI, the filmmakers present a wake-up call that explores the existential dangers and promise of the rapidly rising technology.
Daniel Kwan and Jonathan Wang from Playgrounds, Shane Boris from Cottage M, Diane Becker from Fishbowl Films, and Ted Tremper served as producers.
