‘The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story led the field of drama series in the television sections of the Golden Globe nominations, but there were also multiple nods for British shows A Very English ScandalBodyguard and Killing Eve.

Other new series making strong showings included HomecomingSharp Objects and Escape At Dannemora, while ManiacYellowstoneJack RyanCounterpart and Camping wereamong shows shut out by Globe voters.

After the dramatic tie between Netflix and HBO at this year’s Emmys, cable networks maintained their edge over streamers in the Globe nominations. FX Networks led the field with ten nods, followed by HBO and Amazon Prime Video with nine each, Netflix with eight and Showtime with six.

The Globe’s best drama series category features an all-new set of nominees, last year’s winner in the category, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, being edged out by FX’s The Americans, which was almost certain to make a showing for its sixth and final season.

FX’s Pose, from American Crime Story creator and Globe favourite Ryan Murphy, joined first season series Bodyguard, produced by ITV Studios but screened in the US by Netflix, Amazon’s Homecoming and BBC America’s Killing Eve to complete the category. 

In the musical or comedy series nominees line-up, new contenders including HBO’s Barry and Jim Carrey’s Kidding, from Showtime, joined by last year’s Globe winner (and this year’s Emmy winner) from Amazon,The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.

In the best limited series or motion picture for television category, FX’sThe Assassination of Gianni Versace was joined by Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora, HBO’s Sharp Objects,A Very English Scandal (screened in the US by Amazon) and less predictable contender The Alienist, from TNT.

Shut out of the category were Netflix’s Maniac, Amazon’s The Romanoffs and Showtime’s Patrick Melrose.

Among the actresses nominated for drama series, last year’s winner Elisabeth Moss was back in contention for The Handmaid’s Tale, but the new faces included Sandra Oh for Killing Eve and Julia Roberts for Homecoming. Possible contenders who did not make the cut included House Of Cards lead Robin Wright and new Dr Who Jodie Whittaker. 

The actors nominated for their work in drama series included return nominee Jason Bateman, from Netflix’s OzarkBodyguard’s Richard Madden, The Americans’ Matthew Rhys,Homecoming’s Stephan James and Pose’s Billy Porter. Missing form the category were John Krasinski, from Amazon’s Jack Ryan, and Kevin Costner, from the Paramount Network’s Yellowstone.

In the limited series actress category, Connie Britton was the surprise entry for Bravo’s Dirty John, joining Amy Adams for Sharp Objects, Patricia Arquette for Escape At Dannemora, Laura Dern for HBO’s The Tale and Regina King for Netflix’s Seven Seconds.
