EXCLUSIVE: Guillaume Canet will star as former French justice minister Robert Badinter, who led the fight to abolish the death penalty in France, in Simon Jacquet’s debut feature for French powerhouse studio Pathe.
Pathe is handling international sales and will release in France.
Los Angeles and Paris-based Iconoclast will produce the as-yet-untitled film gearing up to shoot in 2026 about one of France’s most respected intellectual figures and defense lawyers, who died aged 95 last year.
Badinter is best known for enacting the 1981 law that put an end to capital punishment in France..
Jacquet recently penned the script for Karma, Canet’s next film starring Marion Cotillard.
His previous credits as editor and writer include recent French blockbusters Beating Hearts, My King and The Stronghold. Iconoclast is behind Spring Breakers, Athena, and Sacrifice.
Pathe is at Cannes with Amelie Bonnin’s opening night film Leave One Day and Martin Bouboulon’s Kabul evacuation drama 13 Days, 13 Nights – In The Hell Of Kabul.
