New Line, Warner and MGM have announced the titles of Peter Jackson’s two Hobbit films and confirmed the films’ release dates.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first part of Jackson’s two-film adapatation of the J R R Tolkien classic, will be released on Dec 14, 2012. The second part, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will follow on Dec 13, 2013.

The 3D films are currently being shot at Stone Street Studios, Wellington and on location around New Zealand. Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman star with Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Waeaving, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis.

Warner Bros will distribute the films through most of the world with MGM handling select international territories and international TV licensing.
