Zoltan Tarr, Hungary’s new culture minister, has promised an era of “transparency” in the country’s state film funding sector.
“The industry has to be open, and the only aspect that should be taken into account is cultural,” he told Screen. “The best script, director and story should get the support.
“To choose which one is the best, we are going to reorganise the various decision-making bodies in a way that will reflect a cultural aspect, not a political aspect.”
Tarr promised to give back “self-governance” to the film industry, with funds distributed on “merit, not political loyalty” and film bodies run by elected new members proposed by the industry”.
He said he is aiming to keep the Hungarian film tax credit, which has underpinned a strong era of inward investment in Hungary. “Our intention is to keep providing a rebate system to encourage creators to come back.
”We want to reignite the system and be a correct and responsible partner for international filmmakers.”
