Universal has crossed $3bn at the international box office in only the third time the feat has been accomplished since 2019.
Announcing the milestone on Sunday (August 30) executives attributed a large piece of the success to The Odyssey, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael, each of which has grossed more than $500m outside North America.
Universal’s third $3bn international year has seen the studio deliver the second-highest international performer of the year to date with The Odyssey on $988.8m. Christopher Nolan’s film will cross $1bn by next weekend.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie finished on $583.2m at the international box office, while Michael, which Lionsgate distributed in North America, stands at $649.6m. Obsession has grossed $205.2m through Universal Pictures International, rising to $242.3m including third-party distributors.
Universal released five consecutive wide-release movies that earned more than $100m internationally: Michael, Obsession, Disclosure Day, Minions & Monsters, and The Odyssey.
Executives said the $3bn accomplishment spoke to the studio’s multi-genre slate that ensured its results were not contingent upon the performance of one film.
