EXCLUSIVE: Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi’s Silent Friend, winner of six prizes at last year’s Venice Film Festival, has been picked up for UK-Ireland theatrical release by Sovereign Films from Berlin- and Lyon-based Films Boutique.
Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Léa Seydoux star in the film that unfolds across three generations in 2020, 1972 and 1908, against the backdrop of a ginkgo tree in a botanical garden in a medieval university town in Germany.
Luna Wedler, Enzo Brumm and Sylvester Groth also star.
A theatrical release is planned for January 8, 2027.
Enyedi’s credits include 1989 Cannes Camera d’Or winner My Twentieth Century and On Body And Soul, which won the 2017 Berlinale Golden Bear and was nominated for the best international film Oscar.
Reinhard Brundig produced for Pandora Film with Monika Mécs for Inforg-M&M Film, and Nicolas Elghozi and Morgane Olivier for Galatée Films, in co-production with Rediance (Meng Xie), ZDF/Arte, Arte France Cinémar, and in association with Allons Voir.
“Sovereign have an exquisite taste for high-quality arthouse films with a strong audience potential,” said Gabor Greiner, chief operating officer of Films Boutique. “We are convinced that after a successful release of the film in the US and Australia, audiences in the UK and Ireland will embrace Silent Friend as well.”
“We love the underlying message in this film, and the unique and compelling way in which it’s told, which perfectly aligns with the bold and visionary filmmaking we’re in this business to finance, produce and distribute,” added Andreas Roald, CEO of Sovereign.
