Three Goodbyes

Seminci, the Valladolid International Film Week, opens today (October 25) with Isabel Coixet’s Three Goodbyes, one of 24 features in the Golden Spike competition, which carries a €70,000 prize for the Spanish distributor.

 Valladolid’s official selection includes several international festival favourites, such as Harry Lighton’s Pillion, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s Young Mothers, Bi Gan’s Resurrection, Gabriel Mascaro’s The Blue Trail, Kristen Stewart’s The Chronology Of Water, László Nemes’ Orphan, Mascha Schilinski’s Sound Of Falling and Sergei Loznitsa’s Two Prosecutors.

They will share the spotlight with seven films by Spanish filmmakers in a festival that prides itself as a key launchpad for independent cinema distribution in Spain.

Coixet’s opening film is an Italy-Spain co-production starring Alba Rohrwacher, Elio Germano, Sarita Choudhury and Francesco Carril star. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Five Spanish productions are making their world premieres in the official selection: Two are first films: Rafael Cobos’ Golpes, a noir set in 1980s Seville and Carlos Saíz Espín’s road movie Lionel, about an estranged father and his son who embark on a trip from Murcia to Marseille.

Also screening is Fernando Subsuelo, a psychological thriller based on the novel by Argentinian author Marcelo Luján about twins, a brother and sister, who become involved in a tragic accident one summer night.

The closing film, playing out of competition, is David Trueba’s romantic comedy, Always Winter, starring David Verdaguer. Also out of competition is Judith Colell’s Frontera, a period drama set in the Pyrenees during the Second World War as Jewish refugees try to flee Occupied France.

Out of competition and a late addition to the line-up is Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet,s tarring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal. Zhao had previously won the Silver Spike and the Pilar Miró award for best new director for The Rider in 2017.

Industry activities

The fifth edition of the Independent Film Market (MERCI Valladolid) takes place between October 29-31, an initiative organised by the Seminci with the Spanish Association of Independent Film Distributors (Adicine). It will gather together 200 distributors, exhibitors, programmers and television and platform buyers from Spain and around the world. 

Exhibition will be in the spotlight again with the Europa Cinemas Innovation and Audience Development Lab held within the festival. With the This year’s focus is on marketing strategies, programming and sustainability.
