‘Boss’

Finecut has closed multiple distribution deals for Boss, an action-comedy that has proved a local box office hit in South Korea.

The film has been acquired for Cambodia (Abnormal Studios), the Indian subcontinent (Star Entertainment), Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore (Clover Films), Japan (KDDI), Taiwan (Cai Chang International), Vietnam (Khang Media) and inflight (Encore Inflight).

It follows sales to 213 Pictures & Media for North America, where the film opened on October 17, and Izagur Media for Mongolia, where it was released on October 24. It will next open in Indonesia on November 5 and Taiwan on November 21.

Directed by Ra Hee-chan, the story centres on three members of a gang amid the search to appoint a new boss. However, two of the gangsters dream of escaping to a normal life while the one man who desperately wants the position is the one that nobody wants.

The cast is led by Jo Woo-jin of hit feature Harbin, Jung Kyung-ho from Men Of Plastic, and Park Ji-hwan of box office hit franchise The Roundup. Further cast include Lee Kyoo-hyung and Lee Sung-min from recent Park Chan-wook feature No Other Choice.

The film received its premiere at Busan International Film Festival before opening locally on October 3, where it has risen to become the 10th biggest film of the year to date with $15.6m from 2.3 million admissions after just three weeks on release.

Director Ra, whose credits include Going By The Book and Mr Idol, recently attended a screening of the feature at Hawai’i International Film Festival.

Boss is produced by Hive Media Corp, the production company behind 12.12: The Day, South Korea’s biggest box office hit of 2023, as well as Handsome Guys and Harbin.
