EXCLUSIVE: US distributor Artmattan has acquired theatrical rights to Laïla Marrakchi’s Strawberries (La Más Dulce), Morocco’s submission for the 2027 best international feature Oscar, among a slew of deals closed by Paris-based Lucky Number.
The film has also sold to Italy (Wanted), Poland (Aurora), Portugal (Midas), Hungary (Vertigo) and the Baltics (A-One Baltics).
The latest deals follow sales to Austria (Panda Lichtspiele Filmverleih), Greece (Weirdwave), Germany (immergutefilme), Benelux (Imagine Film Distribution), and ex-Yugoslavia and Bulgaria (MCF Megacom).
Jour2Fête will release the film in France, Asdo Films in Spain and Praesens Film in Switzerland.
Marrakchi’s third feature premiered at Cannes in Un Certain Regard earlier this year and stars Nisrin Erradi as a Moroccan woman who travels to Spain to pick strawberries in the hope of earning enough money to buy a home for her children. There, she and her fellow migrant workers face exploitative conditions, abuse and sexual harassment, eventually joining forces to fight for their rights.
The film is produced by France’s Lumen and Morocco’s Mont Fleuri Production alongside Spain’s Fasten Films and Belgium’s Mirage Films.
Strawberries will have a gala screening at the Marrakech International Film Festival later this month, after winning the festival’s Atlas Workshops post-production prize in 2025. It is fresh off its Los Angeles premiere at The American French Film Festival (TAFFF) on November 8.
Marrakchi made her feature debut with Marock, which premiered in Cannes Un Certain Regard in 2005, followed by Rock the Casbah in 2013. Her television credits include The Bureau, The Eddy and Carême.
