Magnolia Pictures has acquired US rights to Normal, Ben Wheatley’s latest genre titles that premiered recently in Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) Midnight Madness section.
The distributor struck the deal with WME Independent on behalf of the filmmakers, which continues talks with international buyers.
Bob Odenkirk stars in Normal as a troubled sheriff whose temporary assignment to the titular sleepy Midwestern town is disrupted when a botched bank robbery exposes the town’s dirty secrets and plunges him into a fight for survival.
The cast includes Lena Heady and Henry Winkler. Magnolia plans a 2026 theatrical release.
Derek Kolstad, who wrote John Wick and Odenkirk action franchise Nobody, wrote the screenplay based on a story he and Odenkirk co-wrote.
Producers are Marc Provissiero, Odenkirk, and Kolstad, and QWGmire. Executive producers include Molly C. Quinn, Matthew M. Welty, and Elan Gale, Josh Adler, Rhonda Baker, Carrie Wilkins, Glenn Feig, Matthew J. Anderson, Jared D. Underwood, Andrew C. Robinson, and Ellen Rutter.
Wheatley won the 2016 TIFF Midnight Madness People’s Choice Award for Free Fire.
