A UK-qualifying film includes films such as Paramount’s Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Disney’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps; and Apple/Warner Bros’ F1: The Movie, as all three films based their principal photography work in the UK, employing many UK cast and crew.
Officially, UK-qualifying films are certified as such in one of three ways: either by the BFI’s cultural test; or under one of the UK’s official co-production agreements or the European Convention on Cinematographic Coproduction; or a film which has not applied for certification but which is obviously British on the basis of its content, producers, finance and talent.
The top-performing UK-qualifying film of the year so far remains Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which grossed £46.4m for Universal Pictures following its February release. It was produced by Universal-owned Working Title Films.

The BFI’s definition of a UK independent film was revised in 2023: “Where previously a film only needed to be UK qualifying and not directly made by a major US studio to be considered a UK independent, the BFI Research and Statistics Unit now also looks at where a film has been made with inward investment, whether it is either demonstrable or reasonable to assume that UK talent had substantial creative control or input (e.g., by having a UK director or writer).”
