EXCLUSIVE: Italy’s Minerva Pictures has taken on international sales to the timely feature documentary A War On Women, an exploration of the feminist movement in Iran, tracing its roots from the 1960s to the present day.
The documentary uncovers how decades of women’s activism and the struggle for equality – before and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution – have shaped the recent uprisings in Iran, which have often met with brutal repression.
The film features the intertwined stories of seven women, shedding light on the personal and collective battles that have defined Iran’s feminist struggle.
The interviews include Iranian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani; the former minister of women’s affairs in Iran’s Pre-Revolution government Mahnaz Afkhami; and Shaparak Shajarizadeh, an Iranian women’s rights activist and a former political prisoner.
A War On Women has its international premiere at next month’s Hot Docs festival in Toronto, following its world premiere on March 22 at the Bari International Film & TV Festival (BIFEST).
Raha Shirazi is an Iranian Canadian director and artist born in Tehran. Her short films include Four Walls and Acqua, which both premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and she is an alumnus of the Berlinale Talent Campus.
The documentary is produced by Marco Serrecchia, Marica Stocchi, Beatrice Bordone Bulgari, Gianluca Curti, Daniele Occhipinti and Luca Bradamante. It is a production of Rosamont, Doppio Nodo Double Bind, Eolo Film Productions, Luce Cinecittà with Rai Cinema.
Monica Ciarli, head of international at Minerva, said: “We are incredibly proud to be part of A War On Women, a project that speaks to such a critical and timely issue. The voices of Iranian women must be amplified now more than ever, and we feel strongly that this story will connect with audiences on a global scale.”
