‘How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’

Miramax has secured remake rights to GDH 559’s Thai smash How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, which will be produced by the company’s outgoing head of international production and distribution Yvette Zhuang.

Pat Boonnitipat’s comedy drama has been a box office and cultural phenomenon since it opened in April 2024, breaking records across Asia and earning more than $55m at the international box office. Late last year it become Thailand’s first film to be shortlisted for the international feature film award.

The story follows stars Putthipong “Billkin” Assaratanakul as M, a college dropout who moves in with his ailing grandmother (Usha “Taew” Seamkhum) after her cancer diagnosis in the hopes of securing her million-dollar inheritance.

However, as he faces off against the rest of his family to become her favourite, it becomes clear to M that winning her over is no easy feat and he ends up learning the value of familial love.

Miramax said it had prevailed in a competitive situation with other studios, negotiating the deal with Nelson Mok of Mokster Films on behalf of GDH.

Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman called the original “a masterclass in storytelling”, adding: “Yvette was instrumental in bringing this project to Miramax and we’re thrilled to continue our creative partnership on this incredibly special film and beyond.”

The company has confirmed the departure of Zhuang at the end of May. The executive joined the company from STX International in 2019 and her departure had been rumoured for some time as Miramax pivots towards production. It is understood that the company will move forward with international sellers on a film-by-film basis.

Patrick Wachsberger and Legendary Entertainment fledgling production and sales joint venture 193 is in Cannes handling sales on one such title, Colman Domingo’s feature directorial debut Scandalous! to star Sydney Sweeney and David Jonsson.

The Miramax pipeline includes Roofman starring Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, and Peter Dinklage opening on October 3, and the summer 2026 release of the next Scary Movie film – both through Paramount in the US.
