Adam Scott in ‘Hokum’

Neon has picked up worldwide rights to the upcoming horror Hokum starring Adam Scott from Emmy-nominated Severance, and will kick off talks with international buyers at TIFF next week.

Damian McCarthy directs the story of a reclusive novelist who retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes and is beset by disturbing visions after he learns an ancient witch is believed to haunt the honeymoon suite.

Neon will release theatrically in the US in 2026. Cweature Features has come on as co-producer, alongside Image Nation and Spooky Pictures, as well as Team Thrives, who co-financed the project. The film is currently in post.

Peter Coonan and David Wilmot have joined Scott along with Florence Ordesh, Will O’Connell, and Michael Patric. Siox C, Brendan Conroy, Austin Amelio, and Ezra Carlisle round out the cast.

The film is produced by Spooky Pictures founders Roy Lee and Steven Schneider, Image Nation’s Derek Dauchy and Tailored Film’s Ruth Treacy, Julianne Forde and Mairtín de Barra.

Executive producers include Cweature Features’ Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum, as well as Ben Ross, Dan Kagan, Rami Yasin, Andrew Childs, and Team Thrives’ Bryan Meng and Dr. Terence Chan.

Co-production funding comes from Screen Ireland/ Fís Éireann, and Irish company Tailored Films is also on boad. Jason Wald negotiated the deal with Rosenbaum for Cweature Features, and Ross for Image Nation.

McCarthy’s second debut Oddity premiered at 2024 SXSW and won the audience award in the Midnighter Section.
