‘Post Truth’

EXCLUSIVE: Australia-based Odin’s Eye Entertainment has closed deals on Turkish director Alkan Avcıoğlu’s AI-generated documentary Post Truth.

The film has been acquired for Australia and New Zealand (Label Distribution), Scandinavia (Maywin Media) and airlines (Pictureworks Inflight Entertainment).

The English-language film explores humanity’s rapidly evolving relationship with autonomous technology and how it is affecting our sense of truth and justice. It uses AI-generated visuals, sounds and music with director Avcıoğlu editing the film from more than 60 hours of footage.

The first in a planned trilogy of films, it was the first AI-generated feature to receive a theatrical release in Avcıoğlu’s native Turkey.

The documentary premiered at last year’s Warsaw Film Festival last year and played in competition at Portugal’s Fantasporto. This month’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan) hosted its Asian premiere.

Odin’s Eye CEO Michael Favelle spoke at the inaugural Bucheon AI Contents Summit.

Speaking to Screen, Favelle said the cost savings of AI may determine whether a film is made or not, particularly in the independent sector. “We will see great films and horrendous films made with AI,” he said. “There will be as much AI slop as traditional slop.”

The film’s voiceover was written by Avcıoğlu and Vikki Pardot but is not read by a human.

“Much of the debate around AI and cinema remains centred on whether these tools can recreate what already exists, while I am more interested in how they can expand cinematic language and confront the reality of our time,” said Avcıoğlu.

“The theatrical experience is essential to that ambition, allowing the film’s images, sound and ideas to be experienced at their fullest intensity.”
