Sarajevo Film Festival (August 14-21) has unveiled the lineup of its Open Air programmes, which includes a restored version of Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanović’s 2001 feature debut No Man’s Land as the festival’s closing night film.
Set amid the 1990s Bosnian War, No Man’s Land had its world premiere in 2001 at Cannes. It won the best film and audience awards at Sarajevo later that year, and the Oscar for best international feature at the 2002 Academy Awards.
This festival screening marks the film’s 25th anniversary with a world premiere of Studiocanal’s 4k digitally restored version. The screening will take place at the festival’s largest venue, the Coca-Cola Open Air Cinema, with Tanović expected to attend.
Further films in this year’s Open Air lineup include Cannes 2026 Competition titles Minotaur by Andrey Zvyagintsev and The Beloved by Rodrigo Sorogoyen alongside the previously announced opening night film, Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland.
The festival’s Open Air Premiere strand showcases new works from across the former Yugoslavia, with an audience award worth €20,000 for best film introduced this year.
Films playing in this strand include world premieres of Sarajevo-born Hari Šečić’s The Widower, in which a 62-year-old electrician finds himself a widower and must contend with the realisation he had taken his wife for granted; Serbian filmmaker Predrag Ličina’s The Virus Of Pathological Kindness, about a mysterious man who arrives in 1983 Zagreb claiming to be a time traveller; and Slovenian director Darko Štante’s The Lost Son, which unfurls as a criminal investigator makes a shocking discovery about his estranged brother.
