Searchlight Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to Marielle Heller’s darkly comic neo-horror Nightbitch starring Amy Adams, ahead of a September 2022 shoot in LA.

The Annapurna Pictures production will stream on Disney platforms as a Hulu Original in the US, with further release plans in the works.

Nightbitch is adapted from Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel of the same name, about a woman who embraces the feral power of motherhood as she becomes aware that she may be turning into a canine.

Producers are Megan Ellison through Annapurna, Anne Carey through Archer Gray, Adams and Stacy O’Neil through Bond Group, Heller, Christina Oh, Adam Paulsen and Sue Naegle. Sammy Scher and Havilah Brewster executive producing, with Heller and Brewster working through their Defiant By Nature banner.

“Rachel Yoder’s book took my breath away. I haven’t felt this way about a book since I read The Diary Of A Teenage Girl many years ago,” said Heller. “Rachel’s darkly hilarious tale of motherhood and rage made me feel seen. And adapting it with Amy Adams in mind has been the thing that has kept me going through the pandemic.”

Searchlight previously worked with Heller and Carey on Oscar-nominated Can You Ever Forgive Me?
