Bitter Christmas

Sony Pictures Classics is reuniting with longtime collaborator Pedro Almodóvar and has picked up North American rights from El Deseo to the Spanish master’s upcoming drama Bitter Christmas.

The story follows Elsa, an advertising director who does not give herself time to mourn the death of her mother in December, and travels to Lanzarote with her friend Patricia.

The characters’ story runs parallel to that of a screenwriter and film director, as the film explores how life and fiction are inseparably linked.

Bitter Christmas recently wrapped production and stars Bárbara Lennie, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Victoria Luengo, Patrick Criado, Milena Smit, Quim Gutiérrez, and longtime Almodóvar actor Rossy de Palma.

Agustín Almodóvar of El Deso produces, and key department heads include cinematographer Pau Esteve Birba, production designer Antxon Gómez, and composer Alberto Iglesias.

Sony Pictures Classics most recently distributed Almodóvar’s first English-language feature film The Room Next Door, which won last year’s Venice Golden Lion.
