Emma Stone, star of current Screen Gems hit Easy A, has been cast as the female lead in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man film.

Stone will play Gwen Stacy, first love of Peter Parker, to be played in the new Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios film by Andrew Garfield.

The 3D franchise re-boot is to be directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin. Production will start in December and release has been set for July 3, 2012.

Stone has previously appeared in Sony projects including Superbad, The House Bunny, and Zombieland. Her upcoming projects include Warner Bros’ Crazy, Stupid, Love and the screen version of Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel The Help.

In a statement, Webb said: “The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own.”
