STX Entertainment

STX is understood to be winding down its UK office and staff have been informed, according to sources.

The development comes as it emerged this week that the company is in talks with Lionsgate to handle distribution on its upcoming theatrical slate.

It was also announced that STX chair of the motion picture group Adam Fogelson is joining Lionsgate as vice-chair of that studio’s motion picture group and will start on September 1.

Earlier this summer STX International head John Friedberg moved over to join Teddy Schwarzman and launch Black Bear International.

STX’s London office has been home to STX International since 2017, when it was launched by former Film4 head David Kosse (now VP of international film for Netflix). Based in the Strand, it houses the company’s international sales and UK distribution teams.

STX International releases include Wind River starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, Ridley Scott’s All the Money In The World and Bart Layton’s American Animals. The local distribution team released titles including Hustlers and The Mauritanian into UK cinemas; the company’s last UK release was Spencer last November.

The moves come in the wake of Najafi Companies’ acquisition of STX Entertainment earlier this year following a challenging period for the company dating back to its acquisition by Eros in 2020 and the ensuing pandemic. Since launching in 2014 STX scored hits with the theatrical releases of Bad Moms and Hustlers. Lionsgate had been linked to a possible merger until the Najafi deal was announced.

An STX spokesperson declined to comment.
