Oca

EXCLUSIVE: Argentina’s Compañía de Cine has acquired worldwide sales rights to Mexican filmmaker Karla Badillo’s Oca ahead of the world premiere in TIFF’s Discovery section.

The Mexican-Argentinian co-production from Pina Films, Las Jaras, Pucará Cine, and Año Cero Oca centres on Rafaela, a dedicated young nun from a dwindling congregation who embarks on a pilgrimage to a distant town where a new archbishop has been appointed.

Along the way, Rafaela encounters travellers, a paratrooper, and members of the privileged class. Their trials and perspectives mirror her own search for faith, meaning, and survival in a world shaped by spiritual devotion and material realities.

Natalia Solián from Huesera: The Bone Woman stars alongside Cecilia Suárez from The House Of Flowers, Leonardo Ortizgris, Gerardo Trejo-Luna, Raúl Briones, and Enrique Arreola.

María José Córdova served as producer with Federico Eibuszyc, Karla Badillo, and Federico Sande Novo.

Paulina Portela, CEO of Compañía de Cine, negotiated the deal with María José Córdova of Pina Films and described Oca as “a richly imagined, singular vision that blends lyricism and existential inquiry in a way we rarely see in contemporary cinema”.

Córdova added: “For Oca, walking alongside Compañía de Cine on its international journey means opening the door to a path we’ve long dreamed of: a partner who understands the value of auteur cinema and knows how to connect it with audiences seeking emotion, risk, and beauty.”

Based in Rio de la Plata, Compañía de Cine’s highlights include Romina Paula and Rosario Cervio’s docudrama Again Once Again, which debuted in Rotterdam in 2019 and also played San Sebastian; and Mafi Collective’s documentary and 2024 Berlin Forum selection Oasis.
