The final list of honourees including Idris Elba, Nina Hoss, Jafar Panahi and Catherine O’Hara was unveiled on Wednesday by Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF, September 4-14).
Elba will receive the TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media and attends the festival next month with the world premiere of his short film Dust To Dreams starring Seal. Elba has attended in the past with TIFF selections RocknRolla, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Beasts Of No Nation, The Mountain Between Us, and Molly’s Game.
Hoss, whose credits include Tar and A Most Wanted Man, will receive the TIFF Tribute Performer Award and stars in this year’s festival selection Hedda at Amazon MGM Studios, directed by Nia DaCosta. Hoss previously attended the festival with The White Masai, Phoenix, and The Audition.
Iranian director Panahi will collect the TIFF Special Tribute Award. He won the Cannes Palme d’Or this year for It Was Just An Accident, which plays at TIFF and is distributed in North America by Neon. Previous festival credits include The Circle, Crimson Gold, Offside, and Jafar Panahi’s Taxi.
Catherine O’Hara will receive the TIFF Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award and is known to TIFF audiences for For Your Consideration, Penelope, The Right Kind Of Wrong, and The Wild Robot. Among her feature credits are Beetlejuice and Home Alone, and she also starred in the Canadian comedy series Schitt’s Creek.
TIFF Tribute Performer Award recipient Channing Tatum attends TIFF with the world premiere of Derek Cianfrance’s Roofman at Paramount and Miramax. Tatum was at the festival with Foxcatcher in 2014, and his credits include Step Up, Magic Mike, 21 Jump Street, The Hateful Eight, and Logan Lucky.
Zacharias Kunuk gets the TIFF Special Tribute Award and returns to the festival with Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband). Previous TIFF screenings featured his breakout Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, as well as The Journals Of Knud Rasmussen, Maliglutit (Searchers), and One Day In The Life Of Noah Piugattuk.
Japanese prosthetic make-up designer Kazu Hiro will receive the TIFF Variety Artisan Award and worked with Dwayne Johnson in TIFF selection The Smashing Machine. He has worked with Akira Kurosawa on Rhapsody In August and alongside Rick Baker for a decade including on Men In Black.
The TIFF Tribute Awards gala is TIFF’s biggest fundraiser and will take place on September 7. TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said: “The 2025 Tribute Award honourees represent the very best of what cinema can achieve.”
Three Special Tribute Awards will be presented this year. Kunuk and Panahi join previously announced Lee Byung Hun in recognition of “an individual who has made an extraordinary and unique contribution to the world of film, leaving a lasting legacy through their dedication and artistry”.
