
A24 horror Backrooms and Lionsgate UK comedy Power Ballad lead new releases in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend.
YouTuber-turned-director Kane Parsons makes his feature debut with Backrooms which is out in 585 locations for A24. The psychological horror stars Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor as a therapist and her patient who discover a dimension of endless liminal spaces accessed through the basement of a store.
The film comes hot on the heels of Universal’s horror Obsession from fellow YouTuber Curry Barker, which opened the weekend of May 15-17, earning £1.3m from 486 locations.
John Carney’s latest musical feature Power Ballad launches in 525 venues for Lionsgate. Paul Rudd stars as a wedding singer who jams with a former boyband member (Nick Jonas) at a wedding one night, only for the latter to steal his song and turn it into a number one hit.
Carney’s previous films include 2016’s Sing Street, which opened with £126,269 from the UK and £165,657 from Ireland, and 2014’s Begin Again, which achieved a £454,139 debut.
Kate Moss discovers herself
In re-releases, Park Circus has Legally Blonde in 283 sites, while Curzon is screening a 4K reissue of Celine Sciamma’s breakout hit Portrait Of A Lady On Fire in 43 sites and Arrow Films has eight sites for John Woo’s 1990 action thriller Bullet In The Head.
Black Bear is opening crime thriller Tuner in 180 cinemas. Daniel Roher’s Telluride-premiering film centres on a talented piano tuner who is hired by criminals to crack safes. Leo Woodall and Dustin Hoffman lead the cast.
Kristin Scott Thomas’s directorial debut My Mother’s Wedding launches in 164 locations for Universal. Scott Thomas also stars in the film as a twice-widowed mother preparing for her third wedding. Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller and Emily Beecham play her three daughters.
Trinity Film and CineAsia are opening Hong Kong drama We’re Nothing At All in 43 venues. Herman Yau’s film is based on the true story of two men who set off a bomb on a bus in China in an apparent suicidal act on Valentine’s Day.
Kate Moss-focused drama Moss & Freud is out on 21 sites for Vertigo Releasing. James Lucas’s film follows the UK supermodel as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery when acclaimed artist Lucian Freud offers to paint her portrait.
Artist Leonora Carrington also gets the biopic treatment in Leonora In The Morning Light, which Modern Films opens in nine cinemas. Set in 1930s Paris, the film follows Carrington’s struggle with her mental health as she joins the surrealist movement.
