EXCLUSIVE: 3388 Entertainment has acquired Vietnam’s Oscar submission Spirit Guardians: The Last Secret Of The First Emperor for North America, Australia and territories across Europe and Asia in a deal with BHD.
US-based 3388 will handle the theatrical distribution of the global release, starting late October.
Set in the 10th-century, the story follows seven loyal warriors who must race against time to transport 99 coffins to different parts of the kingdom in a bid to keep the final resting place of the first emperor a secret.
Directed by Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, the historical action epic received its North American premiere at Toronto as the first ever Southeast Asian feature to play in the Gala Presentation strand. The film is playing at Busan in the A Window on Asian Cinema section, following a Vietnam release in late August.
The film stars Tuan Tran, one of Vietnam’s most bankable local actors whose hits include Mai; legendary action star Johnny Tri Nguyen (The Rebel) in his first Vietnamese feature film for almost a decade; rising action actress Thien Tu; and TV star Tu Long.
Hanoi-based BHD retains all non-theatrical and ancillary rights worldwide and is in negotiations with buyers for further territory sales at Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM). Papaian Studios no longer holds rights to the film in North American and South America.
