US viewers consumed 50% more foreign-language content in 2020, with The Platform from Spain, Barbarians from Germany and Rogue City from France the most popular choices.
While the streaming service provided no hard data on viewership of individual films and shows in its What We Watched 2020 briefing released on Thursday (December 10), the information at least offered guidance on trends.
K-drama viewing almost tripled in viewership compared to 2019 with Kingdom S2 and The King: Eternal Monarch proving the most popular, while consumption of anime doubled in the US led by Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution and Blood Of Zeus.
Money Heist: Part 4 from Spain made it into the top 10 in 92 countries, Barbarians in 91, #Alive (Korea) in 90, Ragnarok (Norway) in 89, and Lost Bullet (France) in 89.
In the three weeks following the death of George Floyd in May, viewership of 13th climbed more than 5,000%, while that of LA 92 increased by more than 1,300%, Dear White People climbed more than 700%, Time: The Kalief Browder Story more 500%, and American Son by 270%.
Subscribers watched twice as many documentaries and reality TV this year than last. The top docuseries were Tiger King and Killer Inside: The Mind Of Aaron Hernandez, and leading the features roster were American Murder: The Family Next Door, and The Social Dilemma.
The popularity of romance titles doubled compared to 2019, led by The Kissing Booth 2, Princess Switch: Switched Again, and To All The Boys P.S I Still Love You
The platform cited “huge audiences” for The Crown Season 4, The Queen’s Gambit, Enola Holmes, Ratched, Ozark Season 3, The Umbrella Academy Season 2 and Hillbilly Elegy.
The most popular feel-good entertainment for families and children were The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, The Willoughbys, The Angry Birds Movie 2, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, and Over the Moon topped the charts.
Leading the way in “huge” action consumption were A-list star vehicles Extraction with Chris Hemsworth, Spenser Confidential starring Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke, The Old Guard starring Charlize Theron, Project Power with Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, The Karate Kid sequel Cobra Kai, and a special mention for Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods.
